Greetings, This iron piece has been soaking for a few days, and after cleaning it, I'm wondering if it is part of a stirrup? It was found in the same yard where I found the 17th century BUCKLE and quite a few Civil War camp items, plus 3 full horse shoes, so this yard has a long time-line span. When looking at the bottom of it, the edge is quite fancily shaped. The 'dog-bone' looking area is 2 3/4 inches long. As always, thank you in advance for your ideas and thoughts. Breezie

Re: Does this look like part of a STIRRUP?

See if there is a slotted opening near the end of rounded flat piece If it is you have part of a horse bit
There should be another small round hole below the round hole we can see. It would be for the bit boss
I think it's part of a civil war period bit

VaYank, you're so smart! I 'think' I know the area you are talking about. It appears this part was broken off. Wanna draw me a picture? blink blink, Breezie

Here's a pic of part of a civil war bit. I happened to have in the utility room. If Breezie's didn't have that small section of the bar in it it would have the bigger round hole as well.

Is the scan close enough Breezie. It's the best I could do.

Instead of 'helping' write someone's book, this time YOU write it!

yeah I've been told I should write one but I guess I'm not a writer. There is a certain magazine publisher always wanting articles too. Maybe I missed my calling. I almost forgot. Have you ever heard of the books Never Mace a Skunk. I've got several stories in there but I'm not telling which ones. To daggone emarassing ;D
