I lived in San Simon for a year & heard stories of all kinds but probably just stories.

Check local papers & historical centers.
Don't forget the locals.

There is a book, New Mexico Treasure Stories by W.C.Jameson that has more details than many stories.
Hard to tell what's real. People like to WOW others with tall tales. I am sure there are more stories than treasures.

I believe the most detailed account of the wood cutter is in the Jameson book. The old man found some bags of gold coins and showed a couple of them to his daughter. He went back to retrieve them but never returned home. His body was found in the desert and cause of death was given as heart attack.
