Looks like a water find. I've seen brass come out of the water looking like that.
Hope it's gold though.
Bronze would have corrosion being in water so long. Only gold will look this shiny and smooth with something this old.

Sorry, not always true, I've seen brass come out like that many a time.

Had the rod in the holder, fish pulled it into the water. You have the remaining part with a brass retainer ring.
