found this little guy in my screen last time out, thought it looked unusual and then I washed it off and saw a hole. It looks like it was part of a bigger holed stone but broken in half....but then there is a smaller hole which is easy to see.Looks ground in on both ends like it was drilled from both sides but I am not big on bead tech. It was found in a midden south Of Tampa though, so I figured it had a chance of being an artifact. Thanks for lookin, vn

Might tell the story if you can get a sharp pic looking through the hole with light reflecting off the walls of the hole.

I will try, the little bugger is hard to get a good close up.

If you found that in a midden I would say it could very easily be man-made. I would have brought that home and added it to the collection as well.

My opinion... I'd say the smaller hole is natural and made by a crinoid fossil or some other material eroding away in moving water. The outer surface appears to be smoothed by moving water as well except at the break (how it got broken is anyone's guess). It could have been "manuported" to that midden.

Picture 6 with light in hole doesn't appear to show any drill marks, hole appears to be very smooth.

Thanks for all of your thoughts on this one. I really would have no idea what to look for in how the hole was made. It does appear to be a hole made from both sides and met offset a little in the middle, and that is what made me wonder, besides where it was found. I will keep it in my box of possibilities just in case though. Thanks a mill.
