This is a walking away from the car story for a change. I was walking through the woods toward an area with stone farmer walls that I intended to search. I was casually swinging as I walked the trail when I got a high tone about six inches from the trail edge. I rescanned and got mixed signals and VDIs. I dug the hole and found a leather change purse about five inches down. I could not resist opening it, and immediately saw the half dollar as shown in the first picture. Coins started spilling out the corroded back of the purse, so I put it in my bag right away and picked up the fallen coins. I found nothing else the rest of my hunt, and could only think about what might have been in my bag. When I got home I sorted the coins. Sixteen silvers, including the half, 8 Washington quarters, 4 Mercury dimes, 2 silver Rosies, and a 1944 silver nickel. Also had a few wheat pennies, several Jefferson nickels, and a Buffalo nickel. Twenty-four coins total! While none of these coins are particularly old or unique, it sure was exciting finding them this way, and on the first hole.. Happy Hunting. Good luck out there.

Congrats on your first banner. If Im not digging rare colonial silvers or goldcoins then I want to be digging 16 silver coin spills

Thanks! As much fun as I had, I think I would trade a hundred of these days for that Pine Tree Shilling of yours, as that coin is at the top of my ever growing bucket list.

Such a great find! Congratulations on your Banner. Very well deserved.

Thanks! I had previously admired your cache of coins, and could not believe I found my own. I wish mine had a few Barbers thrown in like yours, but I am not going to complain.

What an amazing find Len, congratulations on achieving your first BANNER on Tnet. :occasion14:
The oldest coin looks to be the '59 Quarter, so are you thinking this change purse was lost in the early 1960s?

Congrats on the recovery making the Banner-well deserved.
I really like the look of the staining imprints on the coinage-shows that they were laying together for the 5-6 decades waiting to be found.
So now the query-(sorry if you answered it already) Are you going to display it together?

Thanks! Yes. The most recent coin was 1959, so I am thinking this was lost sometime between 1959 and 1964, which was the last year the U.S. produced silver coins for circulation (with some exceptions, e.g., Kennedy half). It is just interesting that no one found it around the time it was lost. I am not sure how long it lay on the surface in full view before sinking down or somehow getting buried over.

Thanks! I am thinking the staining is from the copper pennies and the nickels that were mixed in. I only cleaned the silver by soaking in distilled water and gently wiping them with a cotton swab. I was thinking about a baking soda paste, but decided against it, as I don't want them too clean or shiny. I have not cleaned the pennies and nickels yet. The Buffalo surprisingly might have a date on it. As for display, I have not figured that out yet, but somehow want to keep them all together.
