We got about 4 feet down before we were into the hard pan. We found two strap side wiskeys. One was a pint with no slug mold and the other was 3 oz. Both clear. Here is my problem. We think that there were several privys and started digging in another depression in the yard. In that second depression we were finding bits of glass, bricks, and coal ash...but it was mixed in with the hard pan rather than the dirt/ash that we were digging in the other. Anyone got an idea about what is going on here? Was this pit dug? Is it worth digging? Does hardpan usually break the bottles? We got about 6 feet down before we filled it back in.

Primus fans should be aware that the "hardpan" could be a cap. You can usually spot layers in an undug hole. Probing with a long enough probe should determine it.

How thick can the cap be? We dug about a foot into the hardpan in the first but it was almost all hardpan in the second with the other stuff mixed in.
