I don’t know when or where I dug this nickel but, of all the nickels I have dug, never have I seen something like this. Any ideas?

All the lines are raised.

Yes the nickel is toast but I would still like to figure out what I am seeing.

Thanks in advance

Sadly because of the Environmental Damage, I Think even the Experts would send it back in a Body Bag !

Would be interesting if in Mint Condition with those Marks.

a Definite Keeper ! :treasurechest:

Interesting. I wonder if there was something on it in those areas that didn't let it corrode as much as the rest of the coin.

The person in charge of the coin press will periodically stop the press and burnish the dies with a fine wire brush. If the polishing gets a little overzealous fine gouges can be put into the die itself. These will show as fine raised lines on the resulting struck coin.

is a possibility https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=130615

I'm thinking possibly corrosion due to the environment, possibly fertilizer.
