Early Standing Liberty Quarter

I found this on Sunday at my new farm permission, deep in a soy bean field. The only other coin I've found there is a 1970 dime. The date is absent but research leads me to believe this is a 1917, what do you think?

I believe only 1916 and some 1917's had no stars under the eagle. 1917-1930 all had the 3 stars. So it could be 1917, but it could also be later.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Grasshopper is correct. The stars were put on the coin on the later 1917's. The early 1917's had no stars. It's still a nice coin find, but I don't think you will ever be able to date it at this point.

Hopefully, the streaks on the coin were not caused by a cleaning agent; like a Brillo pad.

Hi Don-
That's pretty much how she came out of the ground. It was fairly clean so in the field I barely touched it, at home I did spray it with some distilled water but no brush was used to clean it.

Nice coin, one of my absolute favorite finds!!!.....well, you can get a tighter date range than 1917-1930.....It is definitely between 1917 and 1924....The recessed date (implemented to combat this very problem) started in 1925 but this is not a recessed date.....again, great find, congrats!

The best part is that I rarely find silver, this is only my third silver coin. I'm always whining to my wife that it's gotta be around here somewhere, so this was a big day for me lol. The fact that I looked at this field and determined where an old building stood THEN found this was also a great feeling. I plan on spending a lot more time there until the farmer gets to work this spring. I'm surprised I'm not there right now actually, but freakin' work needs to happen...

Once I'm able to retire I plan on metal detecting all day every day until I can't lift the detector.

Thanks man and nice Les Paul too. I'm a PRS guy right now but I've had my share of Gibsons since high school...mainly 335's but I've had more than my share of goldtops and a beautiful tobacco burst LP.

IMHO, SLQ's are the nicest coin series minted, and dated or not, as a collector and THer, I always enjoy seeing them posted- Congrats!

No matter what it is it’s good I’ve only found two and I remember the first time I found one I remember seeing that eagle and I knew I had something special just like you. A SLQ is always a blessing

Hello...no 8 trust me I’ve tried all the tricks to see a shadow or evidence of any sign of the year!!

The SLQ had raised dates from 1916 thru 1924. With the 3 stars on the reverse yours is anywhere from a late 1917 thru a 1924. 1925 thru 1930 were recessed dates, so the date survived better.

any Standing Lib is a great find. Like the Walking Liberty half, they are a beautiful coin from an era when coins depicted images of Liberty instead of immortalizing politicians. Sadly, a lot of them have had the date worn smooth. Keep on digging. Maybe the next one will have a readable date.
