I‘ve got to disagree with the soap dish theory. Being cupped with no holes for the water to drain means the soap would get soggy and liquifie. it could be something as simple as dresser top change and key tray. or perhaps a cone incense burner.
Wellll... not all soap dishes have holes... and ALL ashtrays have indents.
heh
With that said... it could be something else of purpose... people have designed things for things all throughout time and also "repurpose" all the time... things that were made for one thing yet used for another etc. etc etc. and often i am scratching my head as to the "why".
And with the size being a limiting factor i would agree with the possibility of it being a cone incense burner.... and because it has somewhat of "dents" to hold a cigarette...
it yet could be an astray...
it just seems the elephant and shell motif would fit an aquatic "m.o."... LIKE ,,, heh....

A bathroom. :)

Ah of course, ashtray! I wasn't sure if the style was conducive to a certain decade or something like that. Appreciate the quick reply!

Definitely a mystery, it would've been nice to know what material it's made from though. :icon_scratch: But based on the finish, it does appear to be bronze. Interesting that there's not more wear on the bottom, if it had been used as an ashtray I would've expected to see more of the base metal exposed.
