Hello. I am thinking about taking my ETrac on an airplane ride as checked baggage. Is this a good or bad idea? Any tips I should know about? The airline says that if it is electronic and it breaks I get to keep both halves. Should I remove the brain and take it in my carry-on? Thanks for any info. C9

Hi Mate. I wanted to get my TF900 into the Philippines from Europe ... Foriegners are not allowed to detect on the Islands and face arrest if discovered, so bringing it in my luggage was not an option. So I ended up using a courier company to transport the main box, ($ 100 ) to a safe house on Mindanao Island, while I brought the antennas well wrapped in an old disposable suitcase. The parts were reunited a couple of weeks later and worked perfectly ... After the mission was complete the detector was left at the safe house for future use :-)

Break your detector down. Put the rods in your checked bags and the coil and electronic unit in your carry on. TSA has seen them before and no issues with them. That protects the most expensive parts of your unit. Checking a detector whole only encourages a quick theft.

I pack mine in the original shipping box, and then with my clothes packed around the box. That should be good enough, of course if your bag is lost, or your plane goes down, then you will have a problem!

Do this every time. Would hate to lose the most expensive part of it.

I've flown with my detectors in check baggage many times. You just have to pack them well. Theft is always going to be a concern however its not something to get to caught up about~ things can be replaced. If you can carry the main part of the detector in a carry on do so. Just remember to remove the batteries ;O) Looks a little less like a bomb on the scanner then.

My concern was not theft so much as lost baggage or destruction of the suitcase. A few months ago my brother in laws suitcase was shredded, funny the different items coming around the carousel announcing the impending arrival of the ravaged suitcase. ( Can you imagine? " Hey- that looks like MY underwear!)
