EXCELSIOR Pat June 1865 - What is it?

I found this at an old homesite. It has EXCELSIOR Pat June 1865 on it. It measures just under 1.5 inches wide.

I know that in the early 1900's Excelsior was a shoe company.....
But that doesn't look like any part of a shoe that I've seen.... looks like an elaborate buckle....

Maybe buckle for back of pants or coat.
I would think its a knee buckle but dont think those were being patented in 1865.
Are you sure of that patent date?

Could be a suspender buckle I guess.

That's what I as thinking when I found it, but wasn't really sure.
