On Monday I felt a Celtic gold coming after a few good signs & then when Cru'dad got the silver towards the end of the hunt, I knew we stood a better chance. So yesterday I booked today off as holiday, stating to my work colleague that I would find a Celtic Gold today. Not something I normally throw about, so I'm very happy with the result of nearly 6 hours gridding a huge area.
We only targeted 1 Celtic Gold for the year, so job done with a really good looking RARE type that I need.:icon_thumright:

2 Scrappies
Medieval Leather Mount (Beast head)
6 mostly broken 1st C AD Fibula
3 Celtic Fibula
RARE - Tasciovanus Hidden Faces Gold Stater, circa 20BC.
Here is some interesting speculation about the bull head (Bucranium) above the horse:
''The bucranium on this superb gold stater indicates that Tasciovanos was also aware of the sacral nature of his kingship and, like Augustus, probably performed some priestly duties within the Druid system, including perhaps the ritual sacrifice of bulls, as graphically illustrated by a bronze unit (ABC 2972) of his son Cunobelinus.''

We have covered most of where we think the Celtic site is, however we will keep gridding out-wards next time.

An exceptionally well spent day away from work Crusader! That is a beautiful coin. Congratulations on being able to check off that particular box on this year's "to do" list!
Yeap, if this is the only one we get all year it's been a great year! (top quality rare type, that I need)

Hey Cru, how come whenever I take a day off to go detecting I never find any Celtic gold? Or fibulas or hammies, or scrappies or Romans for that matter ???

Good work man. That is a stunner for sure.

It's that easy? You just say, "I'm taking the day off because I'm going to find a Celtic gold coin," and that's it? Hmmmmmm. I've got to try this.

Congrats!

It isn't (easy) but that's what happened. The signs were there (1st C BC Fibula's - 1st C AD Fibula's & 1 1st C AD Romano-celtic ring, with no Roman coins) & I knew it had a good chance, with our gridding methodology. (in an area we had never properly done)
This is the 5th Celtic Gold from this field, the most we had from any field. But it's a monster field & this was a long way from any of the others, so it felt possible but still remote.

I've been waiting for this! Celtic gold is the best of t-net! at what point does this become "treasure" and gets taken? In any case, well done!

A no point at all (unless I find another in close proximity), it's not classified as Treasure under the terms of the Act.

...so two would be hidden on purpose but one is "lost" ?

The Treasure Act changed the old Treasure Trove rules where there was always difficult Court Cases debating whether the items were 'buried with the intent to return'. The 'hidden on purpose' is no longer relevant. 2 or more silver or gold coins found in close proximity is where they made the new line in the Law. The next changes proposed want to include single gold coins, so they have the right to buy rare examples. Which I believe is a step to far.

you find all these awesome silver hammered coins with regularity and we hardly notice... but they are pretty darn sweet too! What is a silver Celtic coin? are there any? do you find them?

Cru,

Big congratulations, definitely well deserved as the Celtic Starter looks amazing. You and Cru’dad show what kinds of finds are possible if you put in the time to research and finely detect properties. I always enjoy reading your posts and have picked up valuable insight into our great hobby. Good luck with your hunts. Walt
