Another crazy few hours (just over 4) gridding in the last place left, now that the beans have grown up. In the pictures you will see the large area of beans in the middle of the oil-seed rape. We had covered about 85% of that area & now we only have patches of failed oil-seed rape to finish. We were getting in all the nooks & crannies of the failed area & all my best finds came from right in amongst it. ie. tiny patches, less than a metre squared.
I thought we would get at least a couple of Fibula (none:icon_scratch:) & stood a chance of a hammered, but not 4 (1 to Cru'dad)! I got one first dig, normally the kiss of death.

Medieval? Lead pot? Ink well?
1797 Penny
2 Medieval Buckle Plates
Medieval Strap-end (pretty nice one)
4 Hammered
  1. Lizzy Penny
  2. Henry III Short-Cross Penny (Although might be a John with ILGER of London)
  3. Henry III Cut Qrter
  4. Ed I Penny
VERY RARE - Celtic Silver Unit of Cvnobelinvs, Winged Victory on Globe, circa AD30.:metaldetector:(me):icon_thumright:(Type I need)

A celtic silver i've never seen before! :occasion14: Perfect weekend find! With four hammereds as good measure you both had an outstanding day. The cross strap end is also something i had not seen before, very nice!

Great finds!!! Any of those hammered would have made MY day. :icon_thumleft:
Yeap, any would have made ours as well (this time of year). It just seems we have luck on our side when it comes to 'where' the crop fails. An area we tried & failed before but were forced to try again. When harvested, we will pay more attention to this discovery area.

This coin was unknown at the time of Van Arsdell's book publication in 1989, & is classified as Very Rare in the 2010 ABC book. (the latest book on Celtic Coins, except being published yearly in Spinks, every year since its first discovery)

Very nice finds as always! Is this your second Cunobelinus silver of the year or am I thinking of something else?

Can't stop looking at this coin. Are you talking about the second known example here? :hello2:

I always wonder about these failed oilseed rape. Never seen this in my area. That would give us options we need so much....

No not the 2nd known example, you will find a few with a google search. I'm saying, it was unknown before 1989, & Very Rare now. Or as the last catalogue was 2010, it's either Very Rare or somewhere in-between Very Rare & Rare.

Cru'dad always monitors most of our important fields & there crop rotation. Oil-seed rape is not only important because it fails but because after harvest they turn the big stalks in. (ie. a medium-large ploughing). Not a direct drill, like the Wheat & Barley.
