Field of 500 - Barley Stubble - Day 2 - Hammered & Roman Silver...

[CRUSADER]

Last year we had 48 bronze coins & no silver, this year 18 bronze & 2 silver so far.
However, this is because I ensured two things, that we carried on from where we left off last year & that we kept the runs very long.
On day 1 I had guessed roughly where the start point should be but knew I was playing it safe & leaving a gap.(Don't like over-lap on large area grids) I confirmed how big the gap was after checking Cru'dad's GPS map. (something that very few do) Therefore, today we started by filling in this thin gap (6 double runs). It was on this first run I got the silver & it was on the very edge of the light scatter. So I'm glad my long runs paid off.
Only a 3 Hour evening hunt:

6 Roman Bronze Coins
1/4 Hammered (unknown short-cross) - Cru'dad weeded it out of the stubble!
Silver Denarius of Sept. Sev. AD193-94 (Black patina & a type I need) A pleasing coin to find.

I've seen black patina on silver, but this Roman has more of a sheen to it - almost gloss. Is that common for these coins? Also, is the rust color something that's on the surface or impurities in the silver? Just curious. It's a great coin. Oh, and what about the design on the reverse? Do you know what's being depicted?

We call this black patina horn silver. It's very hard and sometimes glossy cover over the silver. You can clean these coins chemically but i like to leave them as is.

Nope, its not very common at all to get a full black patina like this, I only have 1 other similar to this high gloss example. This field is almost one of a kind when it comes to the red hue it leaves in the wet areas of the field. (normally on the bronze coins) It's iron leaching from the soil, not sure if its natural iron or the Roman nails etc....

Not sure I get the question.
We look at the ratio of bronze to silver in the Roman period. The Medieval Silver have no bronzes (as such).
Most Roman Sites don't have very many Medieval Silver on it. Although this site has about as many hammered as Roman Silver. So if thats your question it's 1/1 on this field, however every Roman Site has differing amounts of hammered (but not many) & they are in no way connected, so we pay little attention to it.
