I went into a local pond, where I found the gold ring at the boat launch. Yup, all the way to my ankle with knee high boots on.

at a young age - I shied away from dry suits - I know many guys now use them with no problems - or minor problems
but in 70s and 80s had a few guys drown with waders (the old style rubber ones that fill easy) and some with early dry suits - they got a
slice in theirs from something sharp and filled like a water balloon - no chance of getting out of the suit - specially if you have a weight belt
with 7mm suit (I started out with 7mm waders) if I use weights (most times I don't unless I'm snuba ing)- I have quick release belt and I float like a cork
its I take my feet off the bottom - the set up pictured above - I go out to chin deep in cold water - I have no prob standing and walking without
weights - I know some do - I do what ive nicknamed the "casper bounce" - kind of like man on the moon thing - works for me
OMG that is freaking insane LOL

FYI The "Casper bounce" would be very dangerous to do here in Florida waters given the hugh number of stingrays. Bounce on one of them and you'd be sorry. Real sorry. Over the years of hunting Florida waters, both east and west, I've stepped on a number of stingrays and, luckily, as soon as I felt "the wiggle" lifted my foot as fast as possible before being stuck. So far so good. But many others haven't been as fortunate. I absolutely cringe when I see people running into the water - they have no idea! If you hunt Florida waters, shuffle your feet and take small steps...and if you feel "the wiggle", lift your foot ASAP or face the very painful consequences.

ive been detecting for over 40 yrs - since age 12
I stepped on a lot of creatures over the yrs when I was younger (so I learned early) -
many you don't have in fla. waters
I wear a pretty thick soled dive boot 99% of the time - at least in salt water - and ive stepped on my share
of rays - up here and down there - I wear a mask 99% of time and can see most dangers ahead of time
I'm always telling newbies - to wear proper foot wear - I see many boards with nails and lost of broken glass
and other sharp and spikey things that could end your day - I wear gloves a lot too - some times Kevlar ones

I also cringe when I see people walking the beach, any beach, without footwear (unfortunate but true these days of discarded needles and prevalent drug abusers). Just the fishing hooks alone that I've found over the yrs on the beach and in the shallow surf would give anyone pause about not wearing footwear in the sand.

during the summer I still see some hunters wearing thin or no footwear - as a kid - before I started water hunting - I step on rusty nail - bunch of glass and a few sea creatures
by age 14 I would wear old sneakers in the water - I wear thick wet boots now - always
