I am 99% assuming this is the hammer from a firearm, but not sure since it doesn’t look like anything I’m familiar with. It has a very odd shape for a hammer. Does anyone recognize this?

Thanks for the insight villagenut. I had to google that. I does appear now that it is perhaps some sort of “hammer looking” latch or lock. ?

I'm certainly no expert, but is it possible that it is actually a trigger? Turn the photo side ways and I see the possibility that pulling the curved portion could cause the hook portion to disengage another mechanism . Like a firing mechanism under sprung tension. Probably way off base here. Overactive imagination. Oldtimers Disease maybe.
