Hi all!

Found this coin today, which I think is a King George II half penny. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this a little cleaner?

That is a great find! I'm certain your question has been answered already... would like to see the cleaned up version when possible. :)

Welcome to T- Net. That's a great old half penny. I really wouldn't do anything more to it. You might end up losing some of the nice detail. I'd hate to tell you how many large cents I have made worse by trying to make them look better. Congrats on a fantastic find.
Thank you!

Well that’s a good tip, and I really appreciate it. I had ordered a set of Andres Pencils, but I gotta admit I’m too chicken to use them on it, and I cancelled the order. Since it’s my first coin find I might just keep it as is to remember how it looked when I found it.

Congrats on the King George II Half Penny. Those are some of the hardest coins to determine a date on. Here in Northern Virginia, I have found a few but most of them are nearly slick as yours. Always a great find no matter what the condition! ;-)

Go to any coin collecting forum and you will be told to never clean coins. The patina increases the desirability and cleaning only damages the coin. Rubbing leaves marks and chemicals remove metal. I don’t know anything about auntie Annie’s pencils but I would be very careful if your intent is to retain value. If you want a pretty coin polish away.

Nice find but don't try cleaning it. Soak it completely in oil for about a week. Leave it to dry completely then it wont deteriorate and you can handle it. Just be careful with the edge.

I'm not necessarily worried about value, as I'm not going to sell it, but I definitely dont want to damage it. My goal as to get a little of the blackness off of it, but from what I am reading I dont think its worth it.

Great first coin find.
I would hit that area hard.
Thank you! I'm definitely going back there, ASAP! Its rough going, as the ground is all rocks and tons of trees down, but I'd be surprised if there wasnt another gem or two around. So far I'm find a lot more shotgun shells than coins, though. haha But thats ok. :)

Awesome start to hunting. Congrats, I wish there was more colonial stuff where I am.
Thank you! Well I didnt expect to find anything colonial where I dug this up, so I was surprised, for sure! I know people had been in my area for a long time, but I didnt think it was quite THAT long. Although its hard to say when the coin was actually dropped.
