Hello group. I've been lurking here for the last 5 or so weeks. I'm new at detecting but have been reading this forum since I started, and I thought I'd finally make a contribution to this forum. Following are an assortment of items I've come up with so far (excluding a whole lot of clad and only 2 silver Roosevelts). I've wanted a detector now and again for a long time, finally decided to get what I could afford and chose the M.L. Muskateer. I'm reasonably happy with it, although I know for various reasons I'm not reaching deep, older coins. Till today, it has not rained here (Pleasant Hilll, MO) for about two months so maybe that situation will improve. How much deeper could I expect the minelab slimline 10 inch to be over the 8?
Anyway, the pictures are pretty straight forward. The pocket watch was found at about 7" (No, I can't pick up coins that deep) and was made by the New York Standard Watch Company. They went out of biz. in the mid 20's. All four rings are on the inexpensive side but I had a lot of fun finding them. Oh, if anyone knows the history of the Junior Police badge please reply. It has some heft. Also, I'm curious if anyone can identify the approximate age of either bullets pictured. Take care everyone.

Two more images that go with my first post

These images complete most of the items, minus junk and coins, that I have found so far. Where are the silver coins people? I've found a dozen or so wheats, but only two silver dimes and both of them Roosevelts.

It actually looks like you're doing rather well, considering that depth is limited when the ground is that dry. What sort of areas have you been hunting?

Those bullets look to be from a muzzle loading weapon. My guess would be that they are from the mid 1800's, but it would be hard to tell without further information. The one on the left looks alot like those which were common during the civil war.

Great stuff!

The bullets look recent (relatively speaking). The one on the right appears to come from a modern black powder rifle as I have several nearby from known current black powder shooters and they look similar, including the bore grease residue. On the left it looks like it might have come from a 30-06 or some other .30 cal. within the last 90 yrs. or so.

But those other goodies! Wow, great beginners luck or excellent site choice and good new detecting habits! Keep it up and let us know when you find some of them old loot stashes around there!

Thanks for the replys everyone. All the toys came out of a large front yard of a house my parents recently purchased. It was built around '40 and I've found wheat cents there as early as the mid 30's but still no silver. Everything else came out of two old local parks here, one across from an old train depot. Strange that I can find a watch that old but no old coins. It seems like it's not hunted out, or someone would surely have found the makeup cases and watch. I'm thinking maybe the coins might be around but too deep for my detector and/or lack of moisture. It seems like just about everywhere I hunt I can find quarters, dimes, nickels back to around '65 but no earlier. Is that common?

Great finds! I'll offer that it is hard to find old silver in yards-- seems most coins in the yard are lost by kids, and guess what they play with most often? Pennies. For silver I'd look in older neighborhood or regional parks. But don't be discouraged-- that Junior Police badge looks like a collector's item. Might try Ebay to see if you can find a similar one and what its going for.

BTW, I don't mind silver Roosies-- sometimes that's the only silver I can find, and it still beats clad!

lab rat,

I'm not sure that I agree with you. Most parks and schoolyards have been hit pretty hard. On the other hand, most yards haven't been. Also, if kids could lose silver coins at a park, there's no reason to think that they couldn't lose them in their yards, as well (the same holds true for adults). The only real drawback to hunting yards is that they tend to hold more trash than your typical park.

The Junior Police badge is cool, and if it has some weight to it, then it probably wasn't made within the last ten years or so. All of the newer ones I've seen are all plastic, sprayed to "look" silver.

If I had to guess, I would say it was probably something from the 70's and maybe even older into the 60's or 50's perhaps. It doesn'e look any older than that to me, but I'm not the expert.

Great Finds! Happy Hunting!

Great finds. I dont know about the makeup case, but I found one just like it this summer & it came from the yard of a home built in the 1920's
