I found my first Shield nickel between thunderstorms this afternoon. It was about 6" down on its side. I hit the Shield a bit with the shovel pulling it out. The cap piece looks like it is from an oil lamp. It has a date of Sept 1868 on it. This is the most recent date I have found on this site which dates to the 1830s. The site is loaded with square nails. The lead headed screw was a bit unusual. Has anyone else found an iron screw with a lead head on it?

Congratulations on a nice shield nickel. I have only found 1 in 20 years of detecting and mine was not nearly as nice as yours.

Are you sure the lead headed object is a screw? Lead headed nails were used for putting on corrugated tin roofing. They still make them and I have used them on my tin shed roof. I’m not sure when they started using them, but I know they have been used for at least 100 years.

Thanks for posting, stay safe, good luck and keep swingin.
