Hello folks, if any remember, I found an 1812
Half Dollar back quite a while ago.

Back then I really couldn't post up very
good pictures. Since this is a particularly
special coin, most will know the possibilities
if they look it up. I felt badly that I couldn't
post better pics on the Today's Finds forum.
(My banner post), back then.

There were quite a few who wanted to "dissect"
this coin to determine if it might be "extra
special". ;)

So, for those who enjoy figuring out old coins
and for those who find themselves inundated by
this horrible, extended winter. I thought I'd
get the coin out of the bank box and have it
pose for a couple more, (hopefully better), pics.
(I'd already taken it out for my occasional
drooling purposes anyway. LOL )

So, here's a few more for you coin aficionados
and stymied TH-ers!

Have at it!

1812 HALF2.jpg
1812 HALF3.jpg

Note: I do have a bit more capability for close ups
now so if there's some part anyone wants me to
try capturing, just say so.

Thanks and have fun!

well, it's not an 1812/1, so it's not the big prize money winner. It's in really nice condition on the reverse, but the obverse suffers from several dings and scratches. What an outstanding find. I would flip if I ever dug something like that. From a collectors point of view, in my opinion it's worth in the neighborhood of 300 to 400 bucks, but priceless to you no doubt

Well....of course. That's what I concluded long ago. But, for facts sake, that's easy to say. What do you base your conclusion on?

an example in VF condition carries a book value of approximately 500 dollars. I would downgrade yours slightly because of the damages on the obverse. It's just my opinion of course, someone else may feel it values much higher, or someone may think it values lower. To me, book values are just a suggested starting point because any object is only worth what the buyer and seller come to an agreement on when the cash is actually exchanged

I meant what do you base that its not a 12/1?

I'm not quite sure what "Jewelerguy",

If you think I'm knocking his find, I'm absolutely not. It's incredible, and far better than anything I've ever found in my entire life. He posted it here in the what is it forum, so I assumed he was asking opinions about it. I gave mine, other people may have different ones.

Oh my goodness no! I'm not inferring anything at all! I enjoyed and respect your opinions! I was just fishing to see how people decide on this coin.

I did bring this back up for those who wanted to research before and couldn't because I couldn't post better pics.

I remembered something from my original research, that one indicator had something to do with the ribbon on the reverse. Something about the way the right edge lined up in relation to the "M" in UNUM and the "A" in AMERICA.

The date is the all telling factor but due to age, wear, and depth of cut. It isn't the only factor sometimes.

If it helps anything, I *agree* with you but my friend who is an expert said he's not completely convinced its not.

Anyhoo...it gives something to do while the snow melts.:tongue3:

The only other variety besides the dates is the "single leaf below wing" on the reverse. That is the leaf that points up toward the wing. Yours has the double leaf. To my untrained eye it looks like the small 8 variety. It is still the nicest 50c piece I have seen in a long time and I would be very haappy to have found it.

Thanks!

Yeah, it really is the nicest coin I've ever found the condition, not really good. But, for being kicked around underground, for over two hundred years?!

The age,the particular historic date, the possibilities?

Yeah I am pretty happy. It isn't my number one on my bucket list but its close.

(BTB my number 1? I doubt any could guess. Hint: it ain't gold. ;) )

Those are some nice pics of the silver lady!

Would your first wish coin, be one of the originals they made first before they made the dies for our first coins?

No. This was a regular issued coin. I just fixed it as the one I wanted most when I started. Little did I know that almost half a century later and I still haven't uncovered one.

Its not numismatically worth a "mint". Just a very odd coin that I've been looking for a long time. Maybe my "career" will be over if I do. :dontknow:

Excellent find on this 1812 half.
Here's a nice read on US coin designs for those that are interested.
https://www.usmint.gov/learn/history/us-circulating-coins

And here is an article on a replica of the first coining press used by the US to strike coins by manual labor. (Steam didn't arrive until 1836 I believe.)

You've piqued my curiosity. Is your dream coin a Shield nickel or Standing Liberty Quarter? If not, what type of metal was used to produce it?

No...I've found both of those. Even found 2 cent pieces, flying eagle cents, and 3 cent pieces,( nickel & silver). :)

My dream coin is silver. Don't know what attracted me except maybe the unusualness. But I fixated on this coin right from the start, before I'd found any of those.

Thanks for bringing back a very fond memory!
