Went to cut my daughter's yard today, old part of evansville on north east side in old manufacturing area, across the street there is construction under way, I see an old friend Don Claspell, hunting and he sayes "you should follow behind me, your detector goes deeper" well , after I cut the yard I followed through with my XLT, a few wheats and THIS, this medallion,(it has no holes, or loops for a chain) says "Grand Army of the Republic" with dates 1861-1866 , post Cival War era, medal issued to union army veterans of cival war, these medallions were cast from melted bronze from confederate cannons.

Hey Fred, that is a real clean example of a GAR badge. Not CW era but probably

from a few years after. I found one just like it in a park in Ohio. The GAR is the veterans organization of CW Union soldiers. Remember that design because you might find a button or pin with the same guys on it in the future. Congratulations,
Neal
