Found this old spoon and it cleaned up very nice but can't figure out the markings on back. It has some tiny dot initials above the marks which I understand from reading is among the earliest form of engraving on these. Wondering if anyone has any idea of it's era or can identify any of the markings? Thanks

That's a mystery. The pricked engraving is, as you say, usually an indicator for an early piece. Probably not later than 1800, taking the style into account.

I don't recognise the marks as being British, or as any kind of silver mark... not even silver-plate marks. Is it in fact silver or might it be pewter? You said it "cleaned up very nice" but, depending on how you cleaned it and what with, pewter could have the appearance as we see it now. How did it look before you cleaned it?

Where did you find it?
Hello Creaky....I have a bottle dig along a eroding creek bank and finding all kinds of interesting things people have used as a dumping ground for decades. Lots of porcelain broken pieces as well.

Hello Red....yes, I read that people used to inscribe by using a sharp pointed object and kinda hammering a series of dots to form a name or letters. It was very tarnished with a hard crusty type reddish coating scattered about that I used a razor blade to scrape off then used silver polish (two different compounds) and cloth with a lot of rubbing. As with you, I've ask several people about the markings and none can identify. I don't think it's pewter tho but not positive with anything on this one.
