I've been doing some online searching for research materials and decided that I would start a thread for myself and others who are interested in such things to share links and documents and avoid so much duplication of effort. This is that thread.
I still like print books. I have hundreds, but I can't afford all that I would like to have and damned sure couldn't store them and stay married.

Project Gutenberg was organized to digitize and save books whose copyrights have expired and have migrated into the public domain. Here is, for instance, the search result for "buccaneers" http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/search/?query=Buccaneers

Project Gutenberg main search page: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/

Google Books is a good spot to look as well: Here's the result of a search for A Buccaneer's Atlas, one of my favorites : https://books.google.com/books?id=Z...ose&pg=PP1#v=onepage&q=Basil Ringrose&f=false

Google Books search page: https://books.google.com/

The online "Archive of the Indies" in Seville: Portada del Archivo General de Indias - Archivo General de Indias - Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte

Dr E Lee Spence's website "Shipwrecks.com" : Shipwrecks.com

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's shipwreck database-there's not a lot there, but it may be what you are looking for:
https://www.boem.gov/Shipwrecks/

The US Coast Guard publishes something of a research guide that I have found useful: https://www.uscg.mil/history/WEBSHIPWRECKS/SHIPWRECKGUIDE.asp

The Indian River County Library has a nice collection. Here is the inventory there: http://www.irclibrary.org/pdf/shipwrecks1715.pdf

That's all I have time for at present. Please add to the list if you can.

Speaking of The Buccaneer's Atlas - here is a description of this most fascinating journal.

"On July 29, 1681, a band of English buccaneers that had been terrorizing Spanish possessions on the west coast of the Americas captured a Spanish ship, from which they obtained a derrotero, or book of charts and sailing directions. When they arrived back in England, the Spanish ambassador demanded that the buccaneers be brought to trial. The derrotero was ordered to be brought to King Charles II, who apparently appreciated its great intelligence value. The buccaneers were acquitted, to the chagrin of the king of Spain, who had the English ambassador expelled from the court at Madrid on a seemingly trumped-up charge.

The derrotero was subsequently translated, and one of the buccaneers, Basil Ringrose, added a text to the compilation and information to the Spanish charts. The resulting atlas, consisting of 106 pages of charts and 106 pages of text, is published in full for the first time in this volume. Covering the coast from California to Tierra del Fuego, the Galapagos, and Juan Fernandes, Basil Ringrose's south sea waggoner is a rich source of geographical information, with observations on navigational, physical, biological, and cultural features as well as on ethnography, customs, and folklore.

After almost exactly three hundred years, this secret atlas is now made available to libraries and individuals. The editors have provided an extensive introduction on historical, geographical, and navigational aspects of the atlas, as well as annotations to the charts and text, and they have plotted the coverage of the charts on modern map bases."

22 years ago, when I was looking for Drake's treasure off Isla de la Plata I consulted with these two gents who were most helpful. For this generation of TH-ers, the story of Drake's treasure at that location may be enough incentive to seek it out. "Old Man", a member of TN has a story, from personal experience, of this treasure.

Don -It is indeed still available, including new and used on Amazon, including one signed copy for about $60.
U of C Press also maintains an E-Book at A Buccaneer's Atlas

For those who are unfamiliar with the tale...including the incredible story of the bizarre trial of Bartholomew Sharpe and 2 of his cohorts see "Trial of Piracy" from the U of C volume here: A Buccaneer's Atlas
I am amazed that there has not been a movie about this...maybe there has -Anyone know of one?
Sharpe kept a diary, which is discussed here- I can find no trace of it being published- Pride and Piracy: Bartholomew Sharpe | The Diary: Three Centuries of Private Lives | The Morgan Library & Museum Online Exhibitions

Then there's:

[Philip Ayre], The voyages and adventures of Capt. Barth. Sharp and others, in the South Sea
London: Printed by B.W. for R.H. and S.T., 1684.

Captain Bartholomew Sharp was a natural leader – a requirement to keep violent and rebellious thieves at sea organized under the same flag. Sharp played the part of the privateer, attacking Spanish ships. One problem with that: at the time, England was not actually at war with Spain. The Spanish demanded Sharp be prosecuted for his crimes when he returned to England. Instead, he handed the English a valuable set of maps stolen from the Spanish and was pardoned.

Good luck to all,

The Old Bookaroo, CM

Don,
If I would have known that you were one of the people involved in looking for Drake's treasure off of Isla de la Plata ? I think we could have worked something out. Yes, I do indeed know where the silver was dumped into the waters off of Isla de la Plata. It took me many years and many trips to the Island to find it, but I did uncover one of the Bars and and got a reading for many, many more. I think most people wasted their time scanning for the treasure off of the Hotel on the Island that was owned by the Coca Cola Company. That's not where it is located.

Don, when you were there. Did they still have the Bronze Plaque in front of the Hotel, stating that this is where Drake dumped 45 tons of silver?

Brother Schonno, I do not doubt anyone that has done any research. You very well may be right about Drake burying treasure in Chile.
However, the ship that Drake captured sailed out of Ecuador and headed North. It is documented that the ship was captured just South of Manta Ecuador.
Some people believe that Drake dumped this Silver off of an Island in Costa Rico. The Ecuadorian Government believes that Drake dumped 45 tons of Silver off of Cano Island. Which then became known as Isla de la Plata.( Silver Island. ) I was also told when I was there, that 2 American's dug up 2 chests of silver buried on the beach behind the Hotel.

I do know for a fact that I dug up a silver bar off the beach at Isla de la Plata. I spend many years on and off looking for that Treasure which is mentioned in Potter's Book. A Treasure Diver's Guide. I did not find it, until I read an out of print book written by one of the people in the 1930's that salvaged about 15 tons of the 45 tons of silver. I wish you the best of Luck in your search in Chile. If you find something? Please Let us know.
