I’ve not been metal detecting as munch as I used to and it’s been awhile since I’ve found 1800’s silver.
Well that changed this evening on a quick hunt out in the woods.
Walking along a gold rush era water flume I found this nice seated 1891 s dime.
The details:
Walking along top of the water flume I was swinging my 7 year old xp Deus using calabash’s pitch program and had just noticed how quiet the detector was.
I just stopped and lowered reactively (speed for non deus users) from three to two to get a bit more depth since there wasn’t the usual carpet of iron nails.
So back to walking along and swinging I hear the high pitch hit. Stop and swing to narrow it down.
I just grinned because I knew that “round” sound from 1000’s of hours on my Deus
…Just to confirm (and prolong the fun) I pushed one button to go from “calabash pitch” program to “basic 1” in 4kh
I use that to confirm a nonferrous target as 4kh will come in usually around At least 10-15 Id numbers lower than my standard 12kh I hunt in.
And what do ya know !
Signal went from 88-91 in 12kh to an expected 72-73.

I actually contemplated marking and saving the dig for my friend who couldn’t make it out to detect this evening.
But couldn’t stand to wait so began to dig a small trench around the coins signal to avoid damage.
Then busted out the center clump and sifted through with pinpointer
Bam!

Excuse the dirty fingers and nails (I’m a mechanic and was in hurry for after work detecting so no time to scrub up)
