It would be helpful if you gave some details about how you came to be in possession of the glass cylinder and list or post pictures of any markings.

Metal Detecting
The glass portion is about 3 inches. The upper portion is smooth with a very slight taper. The lower portion is threaded to accept the metal part. Inside at the top and bottom of the barrel shaped portion are metal screens and gaskets. There are no markings on either part.
If it has metal screens in it I'm guessing it's an in-line sediment filter of some sort.
