I need help with some information about this ring. It has no Karat mark does this date it before 1906? I could also use help identifying the markers mark inside the band.

Opinions on what the initials are would be appreciated too!

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Thank you ARC and Red-Coat for your input. I was hoping I could get a better photo of the stamp for you guys but unfortunately I seem to be at the extent of my photography capabilities.

It doesn’t really look like the first with arrows to me but it doesn’t really look like anything else to me either :/ it’s just to damn small. The first with arrows has the first in the center of the crossed arrows. That spot seems open in the mark on my right. Depending how I look at it I see two dots flanking that center in the north and south positions.

Anyway, thanks again for your help. I suppose it shall remains a mystery!

Squirrel ... try this if you would... may work or not...

First get an old toothbrush... older the better... take a drop of good dish soap OR degreaser if you have some... Tarnex... or the likes and take over sink and drop of water on brush too... go in multitude of directions into and forcefully into marking scrubbing etc... do it also when rinsing.

Dry... and try regular (digital) camera on MACRO settings... try from multiple angles of light etc

Post results and i for one shall try again.

Thanks for the additional pics. I’ll keep looking/thinking too, but I wouldn’t give up on this being a Shafer & Douglas mark (or the company’s predecessor, Shafer & Swinerton). The mark has numerous stylistic variations, particularly with respect to the form of the fist, the extent to which wrist or forearm are shown, and the size of it relative to the arrows. Here’s a few more variations in addition to the one I already showed (and note the third one of those marks in particular).

Well, I tried scrubbing it good and taking new pics, unfortunately I don’t think it made a significant difference. I am at the limits of my photography capabilities.

You'll be surprised how well a cell phone camera picture will come out. There are several ways to do this.

One trick is to not zoom in all the way. You can take a picture, then zoom in on the picture and crop the area you want to view.

Another way is to take the picture from an angle, this sometimes allows words and designs to be seen easier.

When one attempts to zoom in on a marking without a macro setting the marking becomes blurred. I use my cell phone camera all the time to take pictures of the markings on firearms that I otherwise can't make out. Which is funny as I have an actual digital camera with the macro setting.

You might need someone to hold the item at different angles in different light settings and take a dozen pictures to get the perfect shot.

Also another trick is to take chalk powder, china marker, etc and fill in around the marking, then wipe it off. This will leave the coloring in the low areas allowing it to contrast to the high areas. This is another gun marking trick we use quite frequently. Oh and it's not a permanent process, so it won't ruin anything.

Just some food for thought.....
