Had a very good day yesterday at a new beach spot in North Jersey. Heavy erosion, and then the Deus 2 got right to work!
The top finds was a "Treble Orange London" gilt gold layered button circa mid-1800's.
Other finds included an 1855 Half Dime with the arrows (only on 1853-55 mint to signify changing of coin weight), an 1848 large cent in remarkable condition for a beach find, multiple other buttons, a brass Buckle, what looks like an old apothocary mixing spoon (not certain of this ID), an ink bottle with traces of ink still in it, a brass candle holder, a furniture knob of some sort, and a bale seal.
Most items looked to all be early to mid 1800's... -JB

That copper was lost really early after it got minted. Amazing detail.
Where does the side seam on the ink end?
The one item looks like its off a candle holder.
Congrats on the Half Dime as well.
Great day overall.

That was my 6th early Cent beach find of the year and yes, the detail is by far the best of the lot that I've found. I also found a cracked early cent with a 29.5 diameter in January that tells me that it's from 1793-1807. The ink bottle is pre-1903- No side seam down the body. And it does look like a brass candle holder. I found a good new spot. Will likely hit it again before the end of the week before too much tidal change!

The bottle surely has a seam, probably on one of the 2 corner edges.
It's square so it had to be a mold, can't be a turn mold. Not free blown either.

That's probably a little bit of the seam.

Yes, I thought so too. No side seam. I checked up and down. I'll have to send a photo of the bottle scar too. I'm not an expert on glass bottles, but I do know that they were mostly prevelant from the mid to late 1800's. Please share more info on it... Tks!

Excellent finds - congrats !

Bottle scar attached...
Pre 1850 usually inks were cone shaped or round.
I was thinking shoe polish/dressing bottle.
Either way it's a sweet open pontil scar.

Interesting! So what would you date it?
1850 or just before.
By 1860s they had started processes that improved the pontil. Basically closing them, polishing even later on.
Your bottle certainly has a broken pontil.
To clarify its where the glass rod was attached to the bottom of the bottle.
The bottle was blown in a mold, then the neck was attached.
The side seam dates the bottle closer.
Page 21 of the link gives details of how to date a bottle.

GREAT FINDS Thank you for posting :)

Tks for the thorough tutorial and link guide to dating bottles. You really know your stuff!

I actually just cleaned (which i rarely do) a second button in the photo abd you can see the words "RICH" and "GOLD" on it. Looks British, but it doesn't look layered like the Treble Orange London button does...
