Golden Gate Park in San Francisco is three miles long and about half a mile wide. You could spend a lifetime hunting this park. Over the weekend I made some big scores out of this park. Hunting 1 foot from the base of a tree my metal detector gave a solid hit at 1 inch on a gopher mound, to my surprise out pops a 1907 V nickel. I proceed to swing around the same tree and get another solid hit at 4 inches. Wow! I dig out this big silver disc, its a 1892-S Morgan Silver Dollar!! It my 4th Morgan, but its been 16 years since my last one. Twenty feet away is a 1939-S Mercury Dime.

Total finds: 3 Mercs, 1939-D, 1942-D, 1945-D, 1 V Nickel 1907, 1892-S Morgan, 6 Wheats.

I'll be back next Saturday!!

Mike,

Congrats on your spectacular silver find!! I know guys who hunt that park religiously every week....very skilled hunters. I think only one of them has pulled a Morgan out of there in the last 4 years, and that was a scraped piece of turf. Finding a Morgan from GGP, or any park is a rare find indeed.

Good luck next Sat.

Attention all Minelab owners.......

Golden Gate Park in California is ripe for the pickins!~

Actually any detector will do in this park. I'm regularly finding mercs and barbers at one or two inches. The park is infested with gophers. These little critters are bringing up all kinds of material when they create their mounds. I've actually eyeballed wheat pennies kicked up by a gopher just laying on the surface!

P.S. I'll try and get some pics up tonight.

Congrats on the silver :headbang:

For the most part, 1800's coins that haven't been kicked up by gophers are beyond reach of any detector at GGP.

Luckily the gophers keep bringing up the goodies

The most bizarre weirdos I've ever seen tend to hang out there. You've got to watch your back at all times. I carry pepper spray just in case. I've seen hypodermic needles and condoms in some of the hidden areas in the park. Great place to metal detect, just some weird people at times. ::)
