Trying to decide which way to go.
with the thin metal if I go apple cider vinegar i may end up with Swiss cheese thinking about just going with evapo rust which won’t totally remove the rust but it will convert what it doesn’t remove into a black inert rust, then either a dip in some gun oil or possibly a thin coat of rust preventative spray paint.

To clarify a bit… the apple cider vinegar won’t hurt good metal but if it has rusted through then it will eat all the rust leaving holes.
This pocket knife for example, I thought I’d clean it up and maybe get it useable but once the rust was removed the blade was Swiss cheese
