I did some digging on the web in my area for old homesites and other old buisnesses... I found an old courthouse and jail museum dating back to 1886, so I asked went there and asked who to speak with for permission, and they told me that it was county land and I needed to speak with someone from the county. So I headed to the current courthouse and spoke with the county administrator's secretary and she said I'd be contacted on the matter. I received a phone call this morning at about 8:30AM and was told I have full permission to detect the old courthouse, old jail, and old sheriff's residence! IM PUMPED!!!!!! :laughing7::laughing7::laughing7::laughing7:

Fantastic work by you, hope it pays off.. keep us posted!

Pictures!,we want pictures.

Sounds like a place I went to in Wilmington Indiana about 15 years ago. 1800's combo of courthouse and jail. I asked the property owner if I could use metal detector and he said "No. Somebody went through there already 20 years ago."

couple of questions: a) Was there some sort of county-wide rule forbidding detecting on county-land ? b) in the course of your getting permission to detect, did you tell them you'd also be "digging" ? Or did you just keep the verbage at the phrase "metal detecting" alone ?

If "digging" wasn't mentioned (and rightly so, as it's a sure permission-killer), be sure you go at low traffic times, when lookie-lou busy-bodies aren't present. You know you won't leave holes or marks, so that's GOOD ENOUGH! :notworthy:

Good luck !

I dont think there was a county wide ban. I just wasnt too sure as its a historical place and it is part of the city's historical society blah blah blah. I said Id be digging only 8-9" deep with a hand trowel and the secretary said "Oh ok, I thought you'd be using a shovel or some sort of machinery. I'm sure you'll get permission then"!:icon_scratch::tongue3:

I guess there was a high profile (for our area) murder trial at the courthouse in 1890 I believe. It was so controversial that the proceedings had to be secured by the state police. It was such a long drawn out affair that the state police had to camp out on the courthouse lawn until the trial was completed. So, there should be some neat artifacts from the state police as well as coins and other things!
Here is the jail and sheriff's residence

Gee, you made it sound so easy to get permission like that! What was your secret? Did you butter up the secretary and tell her how pretty she looked and she went out of her way to make sure you got permission? Just kidding. I've tried a couple of times to get permission at certain places and was polite and explained what I was going to do and nothing seems to work. Felt so awkward. Hate what I'm missing out on. That's why I detect out of the way places in wooded areas which seems less productive sometimes. You must have charisma! Good luck on your site!

Awesome job!!! Congrats to you. It's like hitting the lottery when you get a "YES" to be able to detect a spot.

 Nice job. Hope you clean house.

I was pretty surprised they got back to me so fast! I left the administrator's office around 3pm and like I said, received a call at 8:30 the next morning! I must be a sweet talker! HA!

I kind of felt like a kid on Christmas morning when I received the call!

 Nice job. Hope you clean house.

I hope you find some great stuff!
