Hello

I found this possible Gun port hatch/door. It was pretty corroded. I have soaked and tapped it gently to reveal the initials (R W.) And at the bottom (No. 3) the markings are on the back.

I broke the corner off but I have all of the pieces.

It is 9” tall x 8” wide. It looks just like a either a door for a weapon to stick out or possible for anchor chain.

Found it on the Bay in Long Island. Known for merchant ships

If anyone has a clue what this could be please let me know.

The front appears to have a sunburst in the middle and upper left corner appears to have another 1/4 of a sunburst. At first I thought it was dead sea life but now I’m not sure. Still soaking in vinegar hoping To reveal more details.

Of course it depends on the construction of the ship and the size of guns she was carrying, but isn't that kinda small for a gunport door? On all the restored and faithful reconstructions of period ships I've seen they've been huge. The 24 pounder gunports on USS Constitution were around three feet by three feet for example, and the smallest gunports on HMS Victory for 12 pounders were two and a half feet square.

You have a point. I actually found three of them. I only could carry one out. I was rather far out and had a heavy load. The stove cover suggestion was interesting.

Thank you

Being it was found in water...I would think it to be...A cast iron Steam Ships...Boiler Door?
