I had little time to spend and did part of a roman site nearby. Still lots of trash and i hoped for some roman coins left. It was a bit disappointing but the only roman coin coming up was a nice one of Constantius with a not so common back and a mintmark i couldn't id. Too bad it's damaged. Beautiful coin...
Got some decorated pottery i like and part of a broken scythestone which looked covered with mud like a neolithic adze. Bummer.

Nice coin, but, one ugly SOB on the obverse! Is that where they got the makeup idea for Avatar?:laughing7:

Nice coin - congrats.

Here is Cru'dads thoughts;

''It is Constantine II as Caesar :
Sears ref: 17135
Obverse: FL CL CONSTANTINVS IVN NC Bare headed bust right draped and cuirassed
Reverse: PRINCIPI IVVE[NTVTIS] Constantine II in military attire with Transverse Spear and holding Globe, with F in left and T in right fields.
Mint: ATR for Trier dated AD317-318
probably RIC VII TR 173 noted as R4 (2-3 coins known at book print 1966).''

Kudos to Crudad! I didn't know that ATR is also a Trier mintmark....shame on me... 1966 is some time ago and a couple more will be found until now, but i guess it's still one of the rarer coins.

Correct, that was before hobby detectors were being used, so probably a fair few now, but like you say, a less common one.
