UPDATED BUTTON PICS

An old friend was in town today and we met up for an old game we used to play.
He told me to pick out one of the hardest hit places in the area. You know, the
one that's "hunted out"? That park that almost nobody goes to except newbies that
don't know any better? LOL

It also has to be a place with at the barest minimum, a "chance" that something older might
turn up.

So, we went. The object of the game? Not the most in amount, not silver/gold, not the most expensive.
But, the oldest! (It's a good challenging game. It makes one have to really concentrate on what the detector
is saying.)

Time limit was 1 hour.

He got quite a bit of clad, mostly new drops. But, when I showed him mine, he just grumbled.
(he was seething! I'd beat him again, he has NEVER beat me. LOL )

Here's my take:

2014 (320).jpg
2014 (321).jpg
2014 (322).jpg 2014 (323).jpg

Yep, I EVEN scored a whole wheat toast.
AND, that is QUITE the accomplishment in this place. LOL
But, it wasn't the oldest thing, at least, I don't think it so. :dontknow:

2014 (324).jpg 2014 (325).jpg

It's a button, I'm pretty sure it's old. This is what I started with before trying to clean.

2014 (326).jpg 2014 (327).jpg 2014 (328).jpg 2014 (329).jpg 2014 (330).jpg 2014 (331).jpg

It's non-magnetic, weighs in at a fairly hefty 8.5 grams. I'm not sure if I'm seeing ANY patterns emerging.

Thought I'd let you guys peek and suggest. I'm just not sure if anything further is going to prove worthwhile.
I'm thinking of a bit of soap and water next. Any ideas?

Then, there was this bit of strangeness.

2014 (332).jpg

This is the way this came out of the hole. Together, just like that!
Just a zincoln, but, what the heck is the other piece? :dontknow:

2014 (333).jpg 2014 (334).jpg
Smooth on both sides. I believe copper.
2014 (335).jpg
A bit of substance to it but.... :dontknow: LOL

Anyway, my friend congratulated me on picking a park that truly had "nothing" left! LOL
I'm not an ogre though, we're planning on meeting up tomorrow and I'm going to surprise him
with a trip to "my" mansion. I KNOW he'll appreciate that, even if nothing is found.

Thanks for stopping by!

You have an 18th century button there! I would date it from 1760 - 1780 approximately. I wouldn't worry about being extra careful when cleaning. It is a fairly common button. Soap and water plus a toothbrush should do the job.

I have an idea:

Why don't you LET him win at least once and the objective of the hunt is to find the NEWEST item. LOL

You know one thing at least ( if he is stubborn like I am ), you've guaranteed yourself another hunt with this friend! That gear looking piece is odd since there is no hole in the center for it to revolve on. I thought it might be a leather working tool, but it would need that hole so it could turn. A good puzzle....:icon_scratch:

You can't find that many coins in a whole day at my "hunted out" park. Lots of people detecting around me.

The gear looking thing is a driving range machine token. I was a cart boy at my local golf course back in the day.

I think that is a spark plug gap checker. Looks like the little wire things might be rusted off.
You have a very competitive streak in you (wow)

That's why I picked this one. I knew it had caught a reputation of being worthless. Nobody bothers to detect there anymore. BUT, I also knew that there are a few teams that still practice there. Finding a wheat was all I figured on. The 1700's button? Just cream. LOL Sort of insult to injury in the game. ;)

REALLY!?!?! That is something I would never have thought. I figured new/current as it obviously fell out of somebody's pocket together with a zincoln. Is that shape supposed to be something?

Thanks!!

Well, I don't want to say what detector he's using. Afraid I'd start a rhubarb. LOL

But, we have done that in the past. He lost then too! LOL

About the spark plug thing, I really don't think so. There's no evidence of there being anything else to this. It is very smooth on both sides but one side appears ever so slightly rounded. The other, flat.

About the competitive streak? Oh my yes! I USED to, with an emphasis on the USED TO. I am VERY laid back now. BUT, he did ask for it. ;)

Thanks!

The shape was designed to prevent people from using coins as tokens instead of having to purchase a token. This was a big fail on their part though, a dime would work in the place of one of these tokens all day long. Of course I never used this method though:)

Nothing like a challenge! what machine is your friend using? And good on ya for having patience in public parks/schools. The past two times i got out started at parks and the constant chatter and pulltabs / canslaw drove me insane after 5 minutes. The one place literally looked like people fed cans into a tree shredder lol

A spark plug "gapper" would be different thicknesses all the way around and probably have the thickness of each side designated on it.

I believe asmerri has this thing pegged. :)
