1837 with the 1838 head is another possibility picture #3 looks like a straight line as a 1 or 7 on the last digit

Yeah, the beak looks a bit too big for a '31. I was just looking hard at the date.

Put a light coat of Coin Care or olive oil on it and maybe take some more photos in natural/better light.

I actually have that exact same 1831 penny. I got mine in 1962 by selling the kid that lived across the street from me a roll of caps for a penny and that’s what he gave me. Still got it. 😉

I wonder why they holed them like that
Many theories. I read recently that they tied a string to their belt loops and put them in pockets to not lose them. A lot of money back then.

Does the 1831 have a smaller nose?
Yes, at least the ones I've seen. There are so many die varieties in Large cents that it's hard to say 100% about features.
