If you search "extra gilt" under yahoo images you will see some buttons that have these same words on it. There is not much information about them though. Some war relic website has one with stars on it.

Your "extra gilt" button most likely dates 1790s through to the mid 1800s.

Although it has no backmark to indicate when or by whom it was made there is the quality mark "extra gilt" which was used to indicate the quality or quantity of gold gilt on the button...
