Found metal detecting, a bullet casing that I think might be old, but I know little about ammunition in general.
Any hints would be appreciated, thanks.

I suppose this was better posted in What Is It?, I just noticed :/

How old was the site it was found on? How deep? What else did you find on the site?

I dug it from the dirt, I'd say 2" deep or so, it wasn't on the surface.
In the same area, I found this Winchester shotgun cartridge from 1884-1894

It is a 44-40 WCF case. First introduced in 1873, I find them around ghost towns in my neck of the woods. It's odd that many of them don't have any caliber marking on the case heads, and that's what tipped me off to what it was.

Thank you, I thought it might 'be something', but after searching around for old ammunition info, I knew I wasn't going to be able to pin it down at all.
i'm trying to edumacate myself about gold rush era relics so when the odd bit shows up, I'll have a clue.
Thanks!

You're welcome, glad I could help. And welcome to T-Net by the way! I finds lots of long obsolete black powder era cartridge cases around here. The 44-40 has had somewhat of a resurgence due to Cowboy Action Shooting. The old loads with black powder really packed a wallop too. Where are you located?
