I’m hunting a old Mississippi plantation that burned down in the early 1900’s. I found this weeks ago and have been trying to figure it out on my own with no luck. The property had a mill, cotton gin, and large plantation. What is your opinion on the piece? I’ve been trying to locate previous owners/residents with those initials but came up empty handed. I’m love local history that’s why I’m trying to figure it out. Sorry for the glare in some photos. Thanks in advance

Did you try searching here?

Thanks! I’m pretty sure I did but will double check for sure. The property is in Issaquena County, MS. There was a railroad near by. I’ve found a L.NO. & TRY luggage tag near the property. Thought it had something to do with the railroad but didn’t find examples. Thought about it being furniture ID or cotton bale tag. I have no idea.

Good advise, SD51.
A way outside guess on my part would have been slave tag but I would think more likely a livestock tag. But those are just guesses. SD51 is giving you a systematic search method.

All of the animal tags I’ve seen this morning that have two rivet holes have the letters and numbers oriented perpendicular to the holes. I’m assuming that’s so you can read them easily when they’re mounted on a vertical collar. I’m thinking your tag was mounted with the holes horizontal.
