Give you another one. From a lady that ran the "little" motel as you first enter Bisbee coming from Sierra Vista back in 1983.
"why go looking for gold over there?" "You should look for the one here where the man was out hunting and the ground went out from under him. He landed in a cave with bags of gold coins, but broke his leg. He crawled out and finally made it to town and later couldn't find the cave or where he fell through the roof of the cave."
Almost sounds like Jones, but this one had coins, not bars and a broken leg.
But not enough details as to where he was hunting, N-S-E-W from town, so we never tried to look for it.
Boy, tell people that you are gold hunters/prospectors and you get some stories. More than you can run down. LOL

Buddy,

That story is from the book "Killer Mountains" by Curt Gentry. It was a story told by Robert Crandall. He was a newspaper man and good friend of Ed Piper. He tells the story of when he and Piper were walking along Needle Canyon, and they came across a guy crawling down the trail. The guy was almost dead. He told them he had been off trail hiking and he fell through the roof of a cave about 10-12 feet deep. When he came to, he saw a life sized statue of a man in gold. Piles of bars and sacks in this cave. No way out but back the way he came. He used the gold statue to get back up to where he fell through. It took him a few days to get back out.

When they got him to a clinic in Queen Creek, he died. They only knew the story he told them.

Mike
