I got a Metal Detector! Let's go!

Hello! I'm one very excited student in Augusta, Georgia, and I've just gotten my first metal detector, which is apparently a American Hawks Explorer from Sears.com. Allegedly (there are no brand markings on the box/unit/manual).

I went to the local park already, and apparently that was a bad idea, as it is the biggest pull tab, nail, cemetery ever and it was difficult to pinpoint something. But I tested it home. :) Got my headphones, metal detector, and bag. I've just ordered a sand scoop and a pinpointer, and I will go buy myself some decent small digging tools as well.

I am so freakin' excited!

just the beginning of one durn stay outa trouble hobby!welcome

Congrats on the MD and welcome to the forum! Happy Hunting!

Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully I'll find some good sites soon. Don't feel entirely comfortable going out in the woods alone. I'm a wimpy girl. But friends' properties for now! :)

welcome to our addiction, the only help is another day detecting, good luck

That's probably a good idea and not just because you're a girl. Its advisable to always have a hunting buddy.Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Check to see if there's a club in your area. You can likely meet people there to help you learn your detector and to hunt with in areas you might not otherwise be comfortable venturing out too. Metal detecting is no different that tennis or other solo sports/hobbies...you learn from being with/competing with someone better than yourself, and fortunately, since you're just starting out....that's almost everyone.

A few years ago I had a friend who was about 75 at the time that wanted to learn the hobby. He got himself a nice Garrett detector. We went to a nice park near my office and I got him set up and went off to work on my own. An hour or so past and I went to check on his progress. To my surprise...he had a hole about 3 ft in diameter and at least a foot deep. He said, he kept getting a signal so he kept on digging...one of those cases of "it ain't gonna beat me". Never did learn what was in the ground there, must've been a car because when I ran mine over it...I also got a strong signal, but got him busy filling in the hole again before we ended up in jail. I'd taken the time to teach him how to dig a neat plug, but there's no way you're going to cut a 3ft plug....so we went back to basics and explained that sometimes there's a signal for no good reason and told him that if he's at a foot down in the future to stop....his detector (or mine) isn't going to hit on jewelry, coins etc. beyond that and that anything it's picking up that's deeper than that you'd need a backhoe to get it out.

He never did get the hang of it but loved being outdoors with me so he became my official digger. I'd pinpoint the target, tell him how deep and he'd get down on his old prayer bones and dig it out. He didn't like the technology of the detector, but caught on to the trowel pretty quickly.

Welcome ! Don't let trash discourage you. There's treasure in them thar hills. Knee pads from lowes or home depot work well too. I use an old waist tool pouch and keep a rag tied on it also. Good luck. Rick

Hi Diminish,
Welcome ..Welcome,
I just began me in Dec..LOVE IT!
I am a woman obsessed (well maybe preoccupied) with the hunt .
I live in a remote area off the grid and love hunting in the woods.
Just purchased a Pro pointer and I can't believe how helpful that is.
Hope you enjoy great hunts...HH

Hello DiminishWaltz & Welcome aboard.

CoilyGirl is right anytime your out its advisable to have a partner. Not just because there is safety in numbers or that there are more ways to get hurt than one can dream up, but because you may need help totting back your treasure...

I would also add that after you have dug enough holes you won't be wimpy any more...

Hi my name is Gary Bonin So just got your first metal detector have fun . But first make sure when you go metal detecting to find out if it ok to go there and metal detect because some places you can't use a metal detector so make sure to find out before you go because you might get in trouble with the Law. You can't metal detect on goveamint Land or near R&R tracks or on histstorial land. That could be a histstorial park. And if you metal detect on private land get the owners ok in writting. Just a little help from a metal detecting guy.

Hi I am in town for a few days in Augusta and brought my detector! Let me know if you want to meet up for a dog or any recommendations on places to search!

Welcome to the forum! Digging trash is part of the "fun", but trash can lead to riches. Remember to dig the mid-tones, gold live there.

Just sayin...you guys realize this original post is nearly 27 months old now, right, and the OP's last post was about 1 year ago?? Yeah, it's no big deal, I just get a chuckle when I see this happen, but also just a little sad that someone didn't see enough value in the site to stick around. :(
