Yes, this is thimble. Is there any way to get a date range? That's what I'm really looking for. Context of nearby finds is no real help in this instance: 1850s house that is still lived in. Rang up a 12 - 14 on my Equinox, (nickel range), not magnetic at all. Any thoughts on the material it's made from? I thought maybe brass, but it doesn't seem to ring up high enough. If a pic of the interior would be helpful, let me know and I can upload it. All thoughts and opinions welcome!

Looks like the brass thimbles we dig in PA at 1800?s home sites, sometimes early 1900?s. My guess on yours would be late 1800?s, usually gold plated, but mostly worn off. Nice intact one.

Thanks! What kind of detector do you use? It didn't ring up like brass, kind of low, for mine (Equinox 800). First thimble dug, is a low reading typical?

I use a Nox 600, I would think a thimble like yours would ring up around 21 vdi.
