I do, but don't know if it really matters. Every detector I have ever used needed to be ground balanced so I go with that theory.

I have been trying a setup from Clive Clynick's third book. It uses a manual setting of -9 for GB for extra depth. Previous to that I ran tracking GB setting.

I ground balance at least at the start of every hunt and occasionally in the middle. It seems to quiet the chatter.

I do- but I?ve also not tried to play with it in my test garden.

I?ll head out when I get a chance, and try both ends of the scale compared to proper set, and see what?s what.

I do, more than once if the ground changes as I move around the site

I’ll ground balance at the beginning of a hunt and will ground balance again whenever I notice a change in ground conditions (moist vs. dry, vegetation changes, etc.)

I’ve had an Equinox 800 for close to a year and have been re-hunting ground where I’ve used other detectors in the past. With the Equinox, I’ve experimented using Auto Ground Balance vs. Manual Ground Balance and found the Manual Ground Balance to be slightly more effective on recognizing the deeper targets.

Happy Hunting!

I rarely do......just if I get some ground chatter. Our ground mineralization is relatively mild here.

Every time I ground balance it?s always in the 70?s and 80?s which doesn?t seem right. It?s still haunting me because I hit a lawn that was virgin and never really got a solid target signals.

I do, but it is just out of habit from using the older single frequency machines. The default of zero is fine in most soils with multi-iq. On single frequency detectors you have to ground balance to get maximum performance. The biggest reasons to ground balance are highly mineralized soils (chatter), and to pick up those targets on the fringe of detection depths. The auto tracking works good but takes a few seconds to grab the ground again after you stop to find a target. The coil has to be moving to be able to read the soil.

here is what the 800 manual states:

The default Ground Balance setting of 0 is
recommended for Park, Field and Beach Modes
because these locations typically have less
mineralisation than goldfields.

However, if the ground is generating many noise signals (and/
or the Sensitivity level is set very low), then using Auto Ground
Balance is recommended.

If the Auto Ground Balance process does not greatly reduce
ground noise (due to highly mineralised ground or high salt
levels), then repeat the Auto Ground Balance process by
sweeping the coil from side-to-side, rather than the standard
up-and-down motion

Man I should really start reading manuals/directions lol

I leave it at zero don’t rebalance. I think swing speed has more to do with the depth

same with me, but the Equinox manual does change somewhat over time since it is a .pdf.

I hunt salt beaches only and leave the machine in tracking GB.
