Hi Guys,

I bought several old arrowheads from an estate sale here in Austin Texas. They were wrapped up in cloth in a box with wheat pennies and I got them all for $20. I am fascinated by Native American culture and have some Cherokee blood myself, so I figured why not get them as cool display pieces for my book shelf. Can anyone help ID what tribe/area/ age these are? Or can you tell if they are real or reproductions?

I also bought some cool looking old coins that look to be greek or roman?

Any help is greatly appreciated! I love history but have no idea what I have here.

Thank you,
Brett 20150920_143059.webp20150920_143123.webp20150920_143151.webp20150920_143206.webp20150920_143220.webp20150920_143242.webp

(Deleted By Mod) has a forum that is really helpful for identifying points. A couple of them look like Yadkins to me. One things for sure, they're OLD. Probably a lot older than you think and pre-date the names we have for tribes of the last 500 years. They don't look like reproductions to me.

Arrowhead hunting was actually what got me hooked on metal detecting. I still enjoy going out and looking for them as well. You might find it interesting too that your points actually pre-date the invention of the bow and arrow. They're actually spear or dart points from a hunting weapon called an atlatyl. It worked like a lacrosse stick for throwing spears. Native people used them for thousands of years before the bow and arrow which used much smaller lithic points. People still refer to them both as "arrowheads" though. Great finds! They'll look awesome in a window box display.

That bottom one looks like a beautiful drill. Those are some nice points.....

Cool! Try the artifacts section

Moved to our N.A. Indian artifact forum..

Thank you Gheenoe! Great information, that's crazy that they pre-date the bow and arrow!!! Were atlatls used all over North America by Native Americans? Also are we talking older than 2-3000 years and older? Thanks!!

Gheenoe, do not edit a mods edit again!

No worries. An ID would be easier if you knew where they were found, in the southeast US vs northeast etc. Atlatyls were used throughout North America. Yeah, those are more in the 6,000-10,000 year old range if you can believe it. They're very old. I'm just familiar with Yadkins cause that's the type around here in the southeast that resemble yours. Could be something completely different though if they were found in Texas or elsewhere. You got a bargain for $20.

What did I edit? I added more info to my OP, maybe at the same time the thread was being moved?

I deleted the name of the other forum.

Good point about atlatl darts, gheeno. And yeah a bargain for $20. (And even if they were repros, still a good price for that type work) It would help if something was posted alongside the pieces to give an idea of size. The lower left one is a nice drill, but a couple of others could have actually been used as knives.

Nice deal for 20. How big are they? They are all probably local central Texas pieces, none of them jump out as replicas.

In this screen shot, top to bottom. Nice knife, fire pitted preform or knife, probably the tip from a broken Pedernales or stemmed knife, and a drill.

A base tang knife (assuming it's 4"+), the next one could be something early archaic or maybe Paleo. Looks like a very nice point.

Sorry about that. I had added more detail to my OP probably at the same time you made your change. Then when I hit submit, it overwrote it. Wasn't intentional.

I'm sure you'll get an ID here on TNet. I'll check my overstreet guide later tonight and see if I can find a match for you on your points assuming they were found in the Texas/Oklahoma region.

I will take your word for it, made it appear you edited mods edit....

Thanks for the information everyone! I am very excited about this find. I am attaching a picture with a 6" ruler for scale. Does one of these artifacts stand out as the 'showpiece' from the others? I really like the long thin knife myself (Base Tang? light grey one). 20150920_164512.webp

So looking at them against the ruler they are larger than I imagined. The area found is important. Other than that all you have is shape, material and flaking style. I have never seen fire popped pieces as repros. My thoughts are knifes, preforms and a drill not dart points as someone suggested. jousha sounds right with his I.D.
I like them.
