1854, 1 Penny, New Brunswick, Canada, token​

Wasn’t expecting to find one of these today. Came up as a 30 on the equinox.

Significance​

This was the second issue by New Brunswick, dated 1854 and unlike the first issue was authorised by passage through the correct channels in Britain. The word CURRENCY replaced TOKEN on the reverse. This indicated the official nature of the issue and referred to Halifax Currency, the then standard.

From what I know, it's more common to find New Jersey coppers in New Brunswick than New Brunswick coppers in New Jersey. That may be because there was a mass movement of people northward just after the Revolution but not too many going the other way. This is the first NB I have heard of found in NJ.

the reason for so many colonial coppers in what is now Canada was the lack of official currency and varying exchange rates between colonies. In 1894 (I think that is right) Pierre Breton published his guide on the variety of tokens used in Canada and the Maritimes.... initially with over 500 varieties. Canada needed small change (coppers) and they used anything they could find that would pass. So you get American tokens, French, Irish, British, Danish, Guianese, etc. and LOTS of merchant tokens, bank tokens and private tokens. This is a VERY deep well to fall into, with many of these tokens going for thousands of dollars.

Thanks for the cleaned up pics. Nice identifiable condtion but corroded a bit like the one I found. In my opinion, it is a find to treasure because the ship design is so beautiful and the coin is uncommon.
