I guess I should be grateful, but I want a date!! Is that asking too much??
Anyways, found at a very old fairgrounds in MA. Only down at 4" and rang a solid, repeatable 12 VDI on the Equinox.
I dug around 15 beaver tails and newer pull tabs at around 14-17 VDI before finding this.

I'm also learning how to photograph these old coins, I'm getting better...
Happy hunting all!!

Congrats on your find! I would guess tht 75% of my V nickels ( and buffalo and shield nickels too) fall in that catagory...totally smoked...no date. But..at least they have some age to them. Where there are V nickels, you will find Barber dimes and quarters. Keep at it!

Congrats on your first V Nickel !

It's up to you but ... we clean old Nickels with Extra Fine Steel Wool - this could possibly help you see the date.

Good Luck & Good Hunting !

Awesome find. Mine always come out of the ground looking burnt on both sides. I think I see '89 for the date.

Nice find Will- Congrats! Sadly the majority of nickels will look like that, but you've got a clear date, which is better than most...

Hello, nice find. I have a dug a few V nickels, and there is a product called Nic-a -date you can use to pull dates from buffalos, Vs and Shield nickels. I have used it 3 x...it does leave a shiny spot on the coin but will probably work. It uses the original imprint when the coin was made and raises that us thru a chemical etching. A bottle is less than $10. Good find once again !

I think all the ones that I've found are red from being in the ground. And I agree on the 1890, congrats!

yep, 1890. I like V nicks. Very first coin I found when I started detecting about 46 years ago was a V nick.
