Found an older casing and an older cartridge on my hunt today. No value just a curiosity question. They are new to me.

Both are pretty beat up. Measurements as best as I can get them due to condition are:

casing is .87" tall, .57" wide with the base .64" wide.

The cartridge is 1.75" tall, .54" wide with the base .64" wide.

That is because no such thing exists. You've been misled.

I agree with the ID of the long cartridge as a .50-70 "Government Rifle" cartridge.

Right on azdirtdigger and Cannonballguy. 50-70 inside primed. not sure of the short one. 50 pistol was a good guess.
