I was thinking thermostat, but I can’t seem to find a picture of one like it to confirm.

The last photo shows adjustment teeth and two separate adjustment plates. The other two show base pins that would fit into something to keep the mechanism from turning.:icon_scratch:

My first impression was that it might be a thermostat, but I see no coil spring that is usually used to open and close it. My second thought was it could be a door knob lock... I don.t know why I thought that!

It has sort of a thick felt gasket on it.
