Identified my button dug!

This is the button dug from my backyard, so cool to find out it is a historic golf button. Didn’t even know golf was dated that far back, just wish I knew exact date. Found in Tell City, Indiana.

Cool find. As I said on your other thread, the design is taken from that used by the Royal Blackheath club, said to be England's oldest golf club and regarded by some as the cradle of golf. However, they don't seem to have ever copyrighted the design and it has been widely copied in a number of countries all the way through to modern times. Royal Blackheath no longer uses the design, although elements of it are still present in their current crest. You can still buy these buttons today. Over time they have been used by other clubs, by golf enthusiasts and as generic gentlemen's buttons on blazers and such.

Fo those reasons, they're difficult to date and attribute unless there's a helpful backmark.
