From the Days Gone By File: Bionic Pumpkin -- From old farmer who maintained his strawberry patch. Build a 5-Gal Bucket with soaker hose arrangement. Fill it up with nutrient solution -- Used to put old nails (for iron), fertilizer and growing solutions (Miracle Grow) in rainwater. Ring the plant and let it drip irrigate the area. Did things right, because his strawberries and berries were largest around.

Consider building small pen around plant, 2x2's with 1x2 frame covered with chicken wire or box arrangement. Anything to keep birds and animals out. Make sure you keep a dry bed of sand or soil under the pumpkin, so it does not rot. Used to do this with watermelons down here in Texas; always wanted giant one in the middle of the ice tub, may not taste great, but it looked good.

Put a piece of plywood under it. As it grows, lift the outside of the board up towards the stem so the pumpkin won't break away from the stem as it gets taller. May also need to shade it. Get rid of any other pumpkins on that vine. Have fun

If it is the type that is (part squash), it could get up to several hundred lbs.
I grew one that weighed 80 lbs on my first try, so good luck.

Re: I'm trying to grow a giant Pumkin!

Well, I used to grow watermelons, and sometimes for kicks I would mix up a big jar of sugar water. Take a wick and put one end in the bottle, then slit the vine a couple of inches above the melon and insert the other end. It seemed to help. I grew some square ones too by putting them in a box and letting them mature. I don't know what the point was. I am also the guy that grew corn stalks 15 feet tall. They didn't make no ears though. People pulled off the highway to come look at them. I guess they would have made good silage, but nothin else. I hope you get a pumpkin that hits 3 or 4 hundred pounds. We'll look for the pic.

Thanks for all the great advice ! The other day I looked out the window , and saw a dozen wild turkeys heading straight for it , I let my dog out , he chased them away . This morning I built this shelter for it .

Make sure you have "slack" in the vine so it doesn't become a problem as the pumpkin gets bigger......

Make sure you roll it over once a week or so, try to keep it uniform as much as possible.

I Emailed Bill Clark ( a master Maine pumpkin grower ) a question on estimating weight .

he gave me this link - http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Attachments/2005WeightTables.pdf

my pumpkin is -

99'' - circumference
51'' - side to side
86'' - end to end

add the 3 numbers = 266
So it weighs approx 403 lbs according to the OTT chart.

the circumference only chart says it weighs 266 lbs . so I guess it's somewhere in between :dontknow:
