I just got home from a road trip I took to detect on some private properties that had camps from the Indian Wars. I found quite a few buttons (gave some to one of the land owners) and my first crossed saber pin and first Hardee pin. The British penny was a nice surprise, but fits the timeframe of the area.

It's pretty dry out here in the west and the ground is pretty hard where I hunt. I don't think any of these relics were over 5 inches deep. When I get them home i run them through an electrolysis bath to get the caked on dirt off and then buff them lightly with a soft brass brush. I know some people like that grey patina color, but being a 30 year military veteran I believe accoutrements should be polished. Personal choice I guess.

Holy smokes those buttons are in an emasculate condition! I dig CW buttons in Virginia but they fall apart half the time before you get them out of the ground :) great finds!

Great saves!! Indian Wars era military finds are my favorites.

My finds come out of the ground in the same condition.... you have to detect in the western dry regions to appreciate the condition our finds are in... Where I live, our YEARLY rainfall is less than some of the other parts of the country get in A WEEK. Mineral content is what sometimes cause problems.

That had to be a blast I love those pins and other finds. That makes hunting around here seem so boring. Great job
