In the close up I think I'm seeing wood and large iron rivets - like what may have been a handle to a knife or some other "handled' tool.

It's got grain showing in the rust, and wrought iron has grain that shows in the rust. My swag, wrought iron.

Probably a strap off a wagon or early chest -- forgot to add that.

Possibly a strap for purposes already suggested, though my first thought was it was the part of a wrought hinge attached to an oldschool door or hatch.
